A Few Words About the University

The Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education (LNIPE), Gwalior, was established by the Ministry of Education and Culture, Government of India, as the Lakshmibai College of Physical Education (LCPE) in August 1957, during the centenary year of the First War of Indian Independence. It was founded under the leadership of Padma Shri Dr. P.M. Joseph. The Institute is situated in Gwalior, the city where Rani Lakshmibai, the iconic heroine of the 1857 uprising, made her supreme sacrifice. Initially affiliated with Vikram University, Ujjain, the Institute became part of Jiwaji University, Gwalior in 1964. It was upgraded to a Deemed University in 1995 under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, and was subsequently renamed Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education (LNIPE). The Institute was the first in India to introduce a three-year Bachelor of Physical Education (BPE) course in 1957 and later offered a two-year Master of Physical Education (MPE) course in 1963. In 1980, it became the first Indian institution to offer a one-year Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) in Physical Education. LNIPE also began offering Ph.D. programs in 1998.
